28 Cuban migrants found in Florida Keys
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
KEY WEST, Fla. -- Twenty-eight Cuban migrants have been found on an
island in the Florida Keys.
Officials say a good Samaritan alerted authorities Friday morning to the
migrants on Marquesas Key.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission transported the
migrants to Key West. They were then turned over to Border Patrol.
FWC Officer Robert Dube said the migrants were slightly dehydrated and
sunburned but otherwise in good health. He said all are expected to be
allowed to stay.
Under the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy established in the aftermath of
the 1994 Cuban rafter crisis, migrants from the island who reach the
U.S. are generally allowed to remain and apply for residency after one
year. Those caught at sea are returned.
