MANCHESTER, N.H. —Hurricane Joaquin continues to gain strength near the
Bahamas.

The Category 4 hurricane is expected to reach Cuba, Haiti and the
Dominican Republic on Friday.

On Thursday morning, the storm models show the then-Category 3 hurricane
tracking toward Virginia or North Carolina later in the weekend. But
later models showed the storm starting to track away from the coast.

If it continues to track off the coast, New Hampshire could see some
effects from it by Tuesday afternoon. Strong winds and rain could be
expected, and there would also likely be a strong surf.

State officials are telling Granite Staters to be prepared in case the
storm hits New Hampshire. On Friday, Gov. Maggie Hassan will participate
in a pre-storm conference to discuss preparedness activities.

Friday will be dry in northern and central areas, but a passing shower
is possible in southern parts of the state. Again, it will be cool and
breezy.

Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a chance of scattered
showers in southern areas.
