14ymedio, Havana, 2 June 2014 – In its latest report*, for the month of
May, the Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation
reported 1,120 arrests of peaceful dissidents and activists. This figure
is one of the "highest in recent decades with regards to the number of
arrests for political reasons," the document reports.

As an example, the report cites the case of journalist Guillermo
Fariñas, winner of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom
of Thought, who has been arrested every Monday over the last 19 weeks.
In the introduction to the list of detainees, the text reports an
increase in "repressive violence against citizens who dare to disagree
publicly."

This report is prepared monthly by the Cuban Commission for Human Rights
and National Reconciliation, an independent organization led by Elizardo
Sanchez; the government of the island does not recognize the
organization in any legal way.
