Cuban "internationalist workers" in Venezuela have increased by 12% in
the past two years, according to official reports.
There are 44,804 Cubans providing all type of services in different
social programs (missions) that started in Venezuela in 2003,
Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez said Thursday.
Rogelio Polanco, Cuba's Ambassador to Caracas, reported on October 22,
2010, in a rare press conference, on "40,000 Cuban aid workers in
Venezuela, and 30,000 out of them are working as doctors." According to
that estimate, a total of 4,804 Cubans landed in Venezuela in the past
two years.
The Cuban envoy did not specify the areas where the rest of his fellow
citizens were providing services. Nor did he mention the cost of their
services.
"There are 31,777 aid workers in the medical mission; a total of 6,225
in the sports projects; 1,905 in the cultural mission "Corazón Adentro;"
54 in the health mission "José Gregorio Hernández;" 735 in the
agricultural Mission "Campo Adentro," and 486 in the Educational
Mission," Chávez announced. He said that he had not mentioned the Cuban
people working in the power sector. The Cuban ambassador was present in
the meeting.
Thanks to the growth of services exports over the past few years to
Venezuela and elsewhere, the Cuban economy has managed to get some fresh
air.
